The South of France - Fountain de Vaucluse, Chateau de La Barben, Greoux les Bains

Having an outdoor lunch next to the Sorgue River at Fountain de Vaucluse.

The Sorgue River in southern France begins begins at the bottom of this cliff.

At the foot of the cliff is a basin (the cave) with a pond which contains water from a vertical spring that has been explored to at least 308 meters deep.

The spring has an average annual flow of 630 million cubic meters of water--a torrent in the spring and calm during the summer.

It was calm and beautiful the day we saw it.

We stopped and toured the paper mill at the side of the river.

A hike to the castle above Vaucluse built in the 1200s.

The next day we toured Chateau de La Barben, a castle mentioned in a 1064 property register.  They have turned it into a reception/bed and breakfast, but still maintain 12 rooms for tours.  Fascinating!

Walking into downtown Greoux for some bread, we found this car for sale.  Wayne was tempted! The local vegetable and fruit stand is behind it.
